Shower Tile Ideas and Maintenance Tips

The tile you choose for your shower defines the entire feel of your bathroom. From sleek large-format porcelain to intricate mosaic patterns, shower tile offers endless design possibilities. At New Creation Kitchen & Bath, we have installed hundreds of custom tile showers across the Greenville–Spartanburg area. Here are our most popular ideas along with maintenance tips to keep your shower looking great for years.

Popular Shower Tile Styles

Subway Tile

The classic 3x6-inch subway tile remains one of the most popular choices for shower walls in Greenville bathroom remodels. It is timeless, versatile, and works in every style from farmhouse to modern. Variations include beveled edges, handmade textures, and non-standard sizes like 4x12 for a more contemporary look. Subway tile can be laid in standard brick pattern, stacked vertically for a modern feel, or in a herringbone pattern for visual interest.

Large-Format Porcelain

Tiles 12x24 inches and larger create a sleek, modern look with fewer grout lines. This creates a cleaner appearance and can make small showers feel more spacious. Large-format tiles are available in marble-look, concrete-look, and solid colors. They require precise installation on a perfectly flat substrate—this is where experienced installers make the difference between a professional and amateur result.

Mosaic and Penny Tile

Small mosaic tiles—hexagons, penny rounds, or linear mosaics—are essential for shower floors where the tile needs to follow the slope to the drain. They also make stunning accent features in shower niches, on the back wall, or as a decorative band. Mosaics add texture and visual depth that large tiles cannot achieve. They are available in porcelain, glass, marble, and mixed-material options.

Natural Stone

Marble, travertine, and slate bring natural beauty and luxury to a shower. Each piece has unique veining and color variation. Natural stone requires sealing and more careful maintenance but delivers an elegance that is hard to replicate with manufactured tile. We discuss the maintenance commitment during consultations so you make an informed choice.

Linear and Stacked Patterns

Vertical stacked tile creates a clean, modern aesthetic that draws the eye upward, making bathrooms feel taller. Horizontal linear tile elongates a wall. Mixing tile sizes—such as a large-format wall tile with a contrasting linear accent band—adds dimension without overwhelming the space. These patterns are increasingly popular in Spartanburg bathroom remodels.

Shower Design Features

Built-In Niches

Recessed shower niches provide convenient storage for shampoo and soap without taking up floor space or requiring corner caddies. We typically tile the niche to match or complement the surrounding walls, and add a contrasting accent tile on the back wall of the niche for visual interest. Standard niche sizes fit standard shower product bottles, and we can create double-height niches for additional storage.

Shower Benches

A built-in corner or floating bench adds comfort and functionality to a walk-in shower. Benches are practical for shaving, sitting, or simply placing products. They can be tiled to match the shower walls or finished with a contrasting stone slab for a polished, spa-like look.

Linear Drains

Linear drains allow the entire shower floor to slope in one direction instead of four, enabling the use of larger floor tiles and creating a seamless, modern appearance. They are essential for curbless shower entries and give the shower floor a cleaner visual compared to traditional center drains.

Curbless Entries

Curbless (zero-threshold) showers eliminate the step-over curb, creating a seamless transition from bathroom floor into the shower. This is both a modern design choice and an accessibility feature. Curbless showers require careful waterproofing and precise slope work—our tile installation team has extensive experience with this technique.

Maintaining Your Tile Shower

Daily Care

After each shower, use a squeegee on glass doors and tile walls to remove standing water. This simple habit prevents water spots and mineral buildup and takes less than a minute. It is the single easiest thing you can do to keep your shower looking new.

Weekly Cleaning

Clean tile and grout weekly with a pH-neutral tile cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals like bleach and acidic cleaners on natural stone. A soft brush on grout lines prevents buildup before it becomes difficult to remove.

Grout Maintenance

Grout should be sealed after installation and resealed annually for cement-based grout. Epoxy grout is an alternative that does not require sealing and resists staining and mildew, though it costs more and requires experienced installation. We discuss grout options during the design phase so you choose the right product for your maintenance preferences.

Ventilation

Run your bathroom exhaust fan during and for 15–20 minutes after each shower. Proper ventilation is the single most important factor in preventing mold and mildew in a tile shower. If your current fan is inadequate, upgrading it should be part of your bathroom remodel plan.
